Police Accountability

September 13th, 2007

During my first term, I voted for 63 new police officers. Public safety is one of our paramount duties, but we need to balance public safety with public trust in our law enforcement, which is why I joined with Councilmembers Licata and McIver to propose a plan that would, among other things, make the Chief of Police explain in writing to the Council when he disagrees with the Office of Professional Accountability on disciplinary matters.

Pedestrian safety is a priority

August 20th, 2007

I’m supporting 24 new red light cameras in this year’s budget to help increase pedestrian safety. From a public policy standpoint, this is so critical because if we are ever going to get more people out of their cars and on to alternative forms of transportation, pedestrians, bicyclists and those riding mass transit need to feel safe.

This issue is particularly important to me because I grew up in a household where we didn’t own a car; riding the bus or our bikes was the only way to get around. More recently, I lost my Chief of Staff when he was struck by an oncoming motorist while he was walking to work.

Why I said No to North Bay

August 16th, 2007

My family tradition is linked with the working waterfront. Today, there are nearly 125,000 jobs connected to Seattle’s industrial lands. These are, for the most part, good family-wage jobs that have been the backbone of our economy.

We have to be very careful with the limited amount of space we have to create more of these jobs. Once we turn our backs on industrial and maritime jobs in places like North Bay, there is no turning back; we simply don’t have the land elsewhere.

I applaud the Port of Seattle for trying to come up with innovative solutions to some of their vacant property. I just don’t want us to lose sight of the vision of a thriving working waterfront that supports the kinds of families who built this city.

You can read the rationale behind the decision by linking to this article.

Recycling in our parks

August 14th, 2007

I’m proud to announce the city is going to start adding recycling bins to our parks as part of our zero-waste strategy.

Through an eight-month pilot program, we’ll put recycling bins at 106 park locations to collect glass, aluminum and plastic.

As our city grows more dense, we need to protect our parks and open space. This is just one way we can reduce our carbon footprint and limit the amount of trash we deposit in landfills.

Alki Foundation endorses David

June 8th, 2007

The Alki Foundation of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce endorsed David’s campaign today. In their press release, the chair of the organization said of their endorsed candidates:

“…in the end, it came down to who would be the most effective leader.”

Skilled trades need to be a part of our economy

May 14th, 2007

This morning, the Seattle Times published an editorial about the difficulty of filling line worker jobs at City Light.

The good news is our economy is humming along. The more salient point of the piece is that these are the kind of skilled jobs that helped build our city; they can’t be outsourced and we can’t be successful as a city without them.

(un) Affordable Seattle

May 8th, 2007

As I’m walking around tonight’s gathering, one conversation keeps coming up–I’m hearing the mantra that as Seattle is growing, it’s becoming more unaffordable for middle class families.

The manifestations of this are “housing is too expensive” or “there aren’t enough affordable transporation options to get around.”

Someone mentioned we’re having a hard time holding on to our industrial and manufacturing industries that have been the backbone of this city because of the lack of affordable land.

This mirrors the conversations I’ve been having all over our city, and it’s why my campaign is built around creating opportunities for all families.

Public involvement in our parks

May 8th, 2007

Tonight, I attended a meeting in Queen Anne about a new proposed park–the Dexter Pit. I was concerned about the lack of public participation in the design of the park. I was pleased to see nearly 50 people show up from the Queen Anne Community Council and parks committee members as well as city staff.

When I called for the audit of the Parks Department last year, my goal was for a better and more open dialogue between citizens and its Parks Department. Tonight, I think we saw the result of that openness and interaction with the result that the East Slope of Queen Anne will have a park that works and is accessible to all families.
